The Laboratory of Tumour Biology / Tumour Immunology at 1st Dept Obst Gyn, LMU Munich, has been working in the field of Disseminated and Circulating Tumour Cells in patients with breast and gynecological cancers for more than 10 years. Up to now, more than 3,000 BM samples have been analysed, demonstrating the prognostic relevance of DTC-BM at primary diagnosis and during the follow up of patients. Data of our collective added to the consensus recommendations regarding immunocytochemical analysis of BM samples. Several studies on the tumour biology of breast and gynaecological cancers as well as phenotyping of DTCs have been performed. During the last two years, more than 2,500 blood samples from patients with primary breast cancer have been analysed for the presence of CTCs with the CellSearchTM device (VERIDEX). Our laboratory also participated in the evaluation study of the CellSearch System by Riethdorf et al. LMU Munich can be called one of the European reference centres for the detection and evaluation of DTC-BM and CTCs.
