IPATIMUP is a Private non-profit Institution of Public Utility. Research carried on at IPATIMUP mainly focuses on breast, thyroid and gastric cancer as well as population genetics and cancer susceptibility, giving high priority to translational research. This covers a broad area of cancer research within which the original contribution of IPATIMUP is well recognized. IPATIMUP occupies a leading position in the field of oncology and is the laboratory of reference in breast oncology not only at the national level but also internationally, as demonstrated by the high value of scientific publications and diagnostic services offered, as well as its inspiring programs of diffusion of scientific culture. Specifically the Laboratory of Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology of IPATIMUP was created in 1989. It is specialized in surgical pathology, fine needle aspiration (FNA) and gynecological cytology with over 12,000 exams per year. Accreditation by the College of American Pathologists was achieved in March 2005 being the laboratory subjected to internal and external quality control exams not only of the diagnostics given by the pathologists but also by the accuracy of the techniques used.
